Adam Smith in the late 1700’s, 1776 to be precise, coined the term Business Process. He took a regularly functioning plant and started what he called to departmentalize functions within the business. Before long, people started working more efficiently with what they knew how to do best and the business output increased dramatically. To this day, of course we have made a lot of changes and there are a lot of options when it comes to designing a process, but we still group functions together in a business to get the most and efficient output from a group or department.
