My friend is a Restaurant Manager of one of the leading fast food chains in New York City.  He told me that once a customer was not given what he had ordered.  The customer got really angry and was arguing with my friend.  Realizing that things were getting out of hand, my friend was frustrated but he remembered the customer service training he had recently taken.  He apologized to the customer and gave him a free pizza.  It meant the customer had to wait a little longer but he appreciated the gesture by friend on behalf of the company.
